OVINE KETOSIS. Ill.- THE EFFECT OF STARVATION ON THE BLOOD SUGAR AND KETONE BODY LEVELS OF WETHERS
نویسنده
چکیده
The ketoses of preparturient ewes and lactating cows have long been associated with a reduced food intake coupled with a failure of the compensatory gluconeogenic mechanism controlled by the adrenal cortex (Dyer, Roberts, Blampied & Fincher, 1953). I n 1941, Groenewald, Graf, Bekker, Malan & Clark reported the production of typical pregnancy disease in heavily pregnant ewes by a sudden reduction in food intake, but subsequent attempts to repeat these resu lts both at Onderstepoort and elsewhere, have not been very successful. In order to clarify the role played by starvation per se, it was decided to assess its effect on non-pregnant sheep.

ever good the treatment, cases of true coma often die. Moreover, diabetic coma is rarely of acute onset ; at least twenty-four hours (and usually several days), elapse during which gross ketosis develops before the onset of loss of consciousness and circulatory collapse. The best insurance policy therefore in the prevention of diabetic coma is the regular testing of the urine for ketone bodies....

A number of investigators (1) have attempted to explain the decreased utilization of carbohydrate in conditions accompanying food intakes low in carbohydrate and high in fat. In the case of the formation of increased amounts of ketone bodies due to such conditions or to diabetes, Nath and Brahmachari (2) have attributed at least a part of the decreased utilization of carbohydrate to an inactiva...

The Ketogenic Diet (KD) has been used in treatment of epilepsy in mainland China since 2004. Clinical indications of KD include: Glucose Transporter Type 1 (GLUT-1) deficiency, Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (PDHD, myoclonus-astatic epilepsy (Doose syndrome), tuberous sclerosis complicated with or without epilepsy, Rett syndrome, Dravet syndrome, infantile spasms, and Landau-Kleffner syndrom...

متن کاملKetosis-onset diabetes without islet-associated autoantibodies in a patient with MELAS.
I t has been reported that excessive intake of sugar-containing soft drinks can result in diabetic ketoacidosis or ketosis in obese patients with type 2 diabetes (1). We describe herein soft drink ketosis–onset diabetes in a nonobese patient with mito-chondrial myopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). A 27-year-old Japanese man consulted a local otolaryngeal clinic with a hi...
